Brad Lander for NYC

Words and Updates from Brad Lander

With New York State primary elections just a few days away, I’ve been pretty focused this month on politics close to home (more or that below). And I’m hoping that, like me (we’re in Nova Scotia), some of you are getting much-needed time this week with your families before school & a very busy fall start back up in earnest.

But hearings on the horrifying nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court begin next week -- and the disastrous impact of his appointment to the Court will last much longer than a week, a month, a year, or even a decade. So it’s worth some of our time right now to join the fight to #CancelKavanaugh.

If appointed, Kavanaugh will push the Supreme Court hard to the right -- threatening civil rights, environmental protections, and a woman’s right to a safe and legal abortion for a generation to come. And his view of unchecked presidential power (a big part of why Trump nominated him) is especially dangerous right now, as our would-be-dictator of a President is revoking the passports of U.S. citizens in Texas, simply because they are Hispanic, even as evidence of his own crimes is mounting.

So it’s not a time to take our eyes off what’s happening in Washington, even if we’d like to. Here are a few things we can do to #CancelKavanaugh.

Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings are set to begin next week on September 4th. There are a series of actions taking place in Washington, D.C. next week (including civil disobedience) organized by a coalition of women’s organizations, including the Women's March and NARAL.

Please fill out this form if you are interested in taking part in these actions, and if you would like to join a bus to DC organized by our friends at the Center for Popular Democracy.

Many of you got to meet Ady Barkan when he was in Brooklyn last month -- so you won’t be surprised that he is taking the lead at this moment in a creative and inspiring way. Ady, the people of Maine, and tens and thousands of us across the country are targeting Maine’s U.S. Senator Susan Collins, who is the linchpin here. She calls herself pro-choice, and she knows better than to vote for Kavanaugh; but it looks like she might do it anyway.

Ady is asking for your help -- with even a modest contribution of $20.20 -- to raise money for a potential ad that would support Collins’ opponent only if she votes in favor of appointing Kavanaugh. If she votes no, your card will not be charged. A pretty creative approach … and one that just might work.

Meanwhile, closer to home, Thursday, September 13th is Primary Day in New York State. And there are some great candidates who need our help to Get Out The Vote!

Please sign up to give a few hours over the next two weeks to help make New York State the beacon of justice, equality, and progressive politics we know it can and should be.

We’ll be working to support real deal Democrats like Zellnor MyrieAlessandra Biaggi, and Jessica Ramos who will get rid of the IDC and take back the New York State Senate so we can protect the rights of women, immigrants, tenants, and all New Yorkers (and all three happen to be dynamite candidates, smart, and really decent people to boot).

I’ll also be working some shifts to help Cynthia Nixon for Governor and Jumaane Williams for Lieutenant Governor -- and I’d love it if you would join me!

Sign up here to learn about volunteer opportunities.

And once the primary is over, it will be time to turn all our political attention to the Midterm Election this November to help take back Congress and the NYS Senate, so we can block the dangerous policies of the Trump Administration and make real progress here.

Please sign up now as a #BlueWave2018 volunteer, and we’ll help you get plugged in to opportunities to canvas, call, and text. Whatever you can do, however much you can do, we need and want your help.

Thanks for taking a minute from your Labor Day Weekend -- and a few days in the weeks and months to come.

A #BlueWave has never been so essential.
