Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Endorses Brad Lander for Comptroller

Congresswoman’s first citywide endorsement in a contested race shows major momentum for Lander’s progressive campaign

NEW YORK – Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is endorsing Brad Lander for New York City Comptroller, bringing major star power and progressive enthusiasm to the race for the city’s chief accountability officer. In her first citywide endorsement in a contested race, the popular Congresswoman highlighted the opportunity for the Comptroller’s office to advance progressive policy goals in New York City and beyond.

“Brad understands that, for government to be able to deliver the bold transformative change we need, it has to work for and with the people,” said Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. “Brad has a powerful vision for how to lead New York City towards a just recovery, embracing investments in good green jobs and truly affordable housing, and building on his track record of working in deep partnership with communities to ensure no one is left behind. That’s the kind of leadership our city needs to face the challenges of the future.”

Lander has a deep history of working in close partnership with organizers, labor and local communities to advance workers rights, police accountability, housing and environmental justice. Before his time in public office, he led nonprofits working for tenants rights and community development. In the City Council, he has worked in partnership with fast food workers to win job stability and fair pay, partnering with freelancers to fight wage theft, and supporting movements for police accountability through both legislation and organizing. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s support builds on that grassroots momentum.

“Alexandria models, better than anyone else in politics, the transformative potential in making government more transparent, accessible, and accountable to the goals of making life better for working families and securing a better future for all our communities. I’m so honored to have her support, and excited about the work ahead together to put government to work for the people and our movements for justice. Together, we’re building a team that’s ready to win the just recovery and brighter future that New Yorkers are hungry for,” said Brad Lander, candidate for NYC Comptroller and City Council Member.

The support of the most popular federal politician in New York City is a major shift in the race. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s support not only cement’s Lander as the progressive candidate in the race but will also help ignite the grassroots coalition that has coalesced in support of his campaign into a major citywide force. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez joins Congressmen Jamaal Bowman and Jerry Nadler, Senator Elizabeth Warren, the Working Families Party and dozens of grassroots organizations, unions, and progressive clubs who have endorsed Lander.
