Public Advocate Jumaane Williams Endorses Brad Lander as #1 Choice for NYC Comptroller

NEW YORK – NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams is endorsing Council Member Brad Lander as his number 1 choice for the role of the City’s fiscal accountability watchdog.

“From the City Council to the streets, Brad consistently lives his values and stands up for the people of New York City,” said Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. “We have partnered together as “partners-in-safety” for more than a decade -- from fighting Mayor Bloomberg’s fighting Mayor Bloomberg’s abuses of stop, question and frisk to marching in the streets night after night last summer in defense of Black lives and protecting the rights of protestors. I know Brad will be a strong advocate for New Yorkers as Comptroller -- working to hold our city government accountable and rebuild a more equal economy.”

Lander and Williams were co-sponsors of the Community Safety Act, a 2013 package of bills to combat discriminatory policing that helped curb stop-and-frisk and created the office of the NYPD Inspector General. The pair have worked together on police accountability, affordable housing, and workers rights issues since even before they were first elected to the City Council in 2009.

“I am deeply grateful for Jumaane’s leadership and friendship, and honored to have his support in my campaign. Jumaane sees the inequities in our society clearly and never stops fighting for a better city and community. I’ve been proud to partner together on campaigns for racial and economic justice, and looking forward to the fights ahead to ensure our city’s recovery is one that centers communities who have faced the most loss and the least support,” said Brad Lander.

Williams is the latest major endorsement to solidify Lander as the progressive candidate in the race for NYC Comptroller. Lander has also been endorsed by the Working Families Party, Congressmembers Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jamaal Bowman and Jerry Nadler, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and dozens of progressive labor unions, grassroots organizations, democratic clubs, and state and city leaders.
